Frequently Asked Questions

What is the experience at Chaya Studio?

Chaya has eighteen years of jewelry design and manufacturing experience. In addition, Chaya has mentors and professionals that have been excelling in their careers for over 30 years.  She can create almost any idea into reality. She is innovative, creative and excited to work with you.

Chaya excels at thinking outside the box to create compelling designs for your ideas. In addition, her list of technical skills is extremely long. If there is a specific goldsmith or stone setting technique you are curious about, please do not hesitate to contact her. Since it is difficult to keep the Custom Gallery up-to-date, the published portfolio on this site is only a fraction of what she is capable of.  She often sends pics in emails as relevant examples of her work.

How is the jewelry created?

Chaya embraces a blend of old-school techniques with modern technology.  Most of the work is hand forged combined with some laser cutting, CAD/CAM, casting.

Where does Chaya’s inspiration come from? What is her design process like?

Chaya’s inspiration for designs comes from a variety of sources. However, she often approach our designs from a nature-inspired, spiritual perspective. She is passionate about making distinct, meaningful, artistic jewelry.

Chaya hopes her jewelry will make a positive impact in your life through her balanced approach to form and content.

What kind of materials does Chaya use?

Chaya Studio has gone green!  As of 2008, 99% of the raw precious metal material Chaya uses to create her work can now be purchased as 100% recycled material.  What exactly does this mean?  It means she no longer purchases any newly mined material.  This decision comes from a desire to help support sustainable business practices and no longer support the mines that do tremendous damage to our earth.  It also parallels with her interest in working with other companies that are interested in sustainable business practices.

You can learn more about Green mission of Chaya Studio at the Green Philoshophy Page.

Chaya’s material options do not stop here.  Some projects require mixed media and Chaya has worked with materials such as steel, bronze, plastic, found objects, glass, and feathers.

Lastly, as of 2010, Chaya has begun to work with glass enamel.  Working with Fair Trade Gemstones has been a wonderful mission but it has also limited her access to color in the jewelry.  With the growing hunger to add more color, Chaya attended Haystack School of Craft for a two week enameling intensive with Linda Darty, author of The Art of Enameling.

Since then, she has integrated cloisonne, champleve and enamel on copper into her portfolio.  She predominantly uses Japanese enamels on sterling silver (champleve) and fine silver (cloisonne).

What is involved in the custom design process?

Please visit Creating a Custom Piece  page to learn more.

IMPORTANT: Since Chaya creates all of the jewelry by hand, she can customize work in many ways.  Please do not hesitate to contact her with any special order inquiries you may have!

What exactly is the I Ching: Book of Changes?

The I Ching: Book of Changes was first written in the dawn of history as a book of oracles, intended to help people with spiritual guidance. This book of wisdom originated over 3,000 years ago and is now considered one of the most important books in the world’s literature.

How does the I Ching work?

Eight trigrams were conceived as images of all that happens in heaven and on earth. These trigrams represent continual transition, one changing into another just as the continual transition in the physical world. The trigrams are read two at a time, turning them into one of 64 hexagram combinations.

What if I would like to learn more about this fascinating book of wisdom?

A variety of translations are available for purchase. My favorite version is: The I Ching or Book of Changes translated by Richard Wilhelm and Cary F. Baynes. There are many different translations available but this is one of the most respected versions.
